2025 Peru Medical Mission: Reaching Remote Communities in the Andes

Our 2025 medical mission to Peru took us deep into the Andes Mountains, where our volunteer team had the privilege of providing medical and dental care to hundreds of individuals living in remote communities with limited access to healthcare.

One of our primary clinic locations was Mauyhuani, a community in the Ocongate District situated more than 14,000 feet above sea level. Over the course of three days, our team cared for more than 400 patients through medical and dental services. As a first-time visit to the community, we were honored to receive a warm welcome from local leaders, including Mayor Andres, who expressed his gratitude and presented our team with handmade scarves crafted by members of the community.

Despite cold temperatures, rain, and the absence of heat, our volunteers remained focused on providing care and health education to those in need. Throughout the mission, we encountered a wide range of medical and dental conditions that required both treatment and patient education.

The mission also brought us to AcchaHuata, a small and isolated community of approximately 300 families nestled high in the Andes. Reaching the village required a three-hour journey along narrow mountain roads through rain, snow, and rugged terrain. Our team crossed a mountain pass at 15,000 feet before descending to the local school, where we established a temporary clinic at an elevation of 14,300 feet.

During our time in AcchaHuata, we cared for more than 125 patients. Common health concerns included injuries related to navigating the rocky landscape, hearing loss associated with mining work, parasitic infections, and various congenital conditions. The resilience of the community and their willingness to seek care reinforced the importance of bringing healthcare services directly to underserved regions.

Our final clinic day took place in Ollantaytambo, where we treated approximately 150 patients. The local school participated in the clinic, allowing children to receive fluoride treatments and educational resources while enjoying a few special treats. Surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of the Sacred Valley, it was a meaningful conclusion to an incredible week of service.

By the end of the mission, our team had provided care to hundreds of patients across multiple communities, strengthening our commitment to improving access to healthcare in remote regions of Peru. We are grateful to the volunteers, local leaders, and community members who made this mission possible and look forward to continuing this important work in the years ahead.
